We repair Motorhomes and Caravans, habitation Checks. The ECxxx chargers will charge either Habitation and Starter batteries if you manually use the ‘Battery’ button on the LCD display controller to select the relevant battery. The Sargent website states: The Bosch L5 is the exact same battery made in the same plant with a different label but better warranty. The above cable not only simplifies installation, but the EC will be able to route the Solar Regulator charge to both the Habitation battery and the Starter battery. All Solar charging is also displayed on the existing EC display. No need for any additional items at all. The Solar regulator does not need to be anything special either, but obviously something like a Votronic is still recommended.

In the old days, people used to run their fridge on gas when they were on the move. The simple solution — assuming your fridge will operate on 12V — is to wire up a 12V connection from your tow vehicle to the van. The trick is to pump as much power into the fridge as you can. The best way of getting power to the fridge in your caravan is to run a minimum of 6mm wire directly from the battery.
And now you get into the grey area that is wire measurement.

Last updated on in Camping Tips Sometimes using electricity in your tent is essential, especially if you want to heat your tent in the cooler months. There are also times when a kettle, microwave, lights, and a small fridge may be useful on a long camp, as well as a bottle steriliser for babies. Not to mention a phone charger! What electrical appliances can you use at the campsite?
The majority of campsites in the UK will provide a 3 pin connector rated at 16 Amps, which can provide a V supply, just like at home. The key here is understanding how much you can plug in before the circuit breaker trips. This may be something only the campsite owner can do, which may not be possible between 9 pm and 9 am, or there could even be a charge for resetting the electrics.
Working out exactly how much you can plug in and turn on requires an understanding of Ohms law and also taking into account any voltage drop which can cause a current increase with long lengths of cable! You can use the table below to see how much power you have available depending on the current available at the campsite.

Batteries achieve the desired operating voltage by connecting several cells in series; each cell adds its voltage potential to derive at the total terminal voltage. Parallel connection attains higher capacity by adding up the total ampere-hour Ah. Some packs may consist of a combination of series and parallel connections.

Sulfation and How to Prevent it Applying ways to minimize sulfation. Sulfation occurs when a lead acid battery is deprived of a full charge. This is common with starter batteries in cars driven in the city with load-hungry accessories. A motor in idle or at low speed cannot charge the battery sufficiently. Electric wheelchairs have a similar problem in that the users might not charge the battery long enough.
An 8-hour charge during the night when the chair is not being used is not enough. Lead acid must periodically be charged 14—16 hours to attain full saturation. This may be the reason why wheelchair batteries last only 2 years, whereas golf cars with the identical battery deliver twice the service life.
Long leisure time allows golf car batteries to get a full charge overnight. Solar cells and wind turbines do not always provide sufficient charge for lead acid banks, which can lead to sulfation. This happens in remote parts of the world where villagers draw generous amounts of electricity with insufficient renewable resources to charge the batteries. The result is a short battery life.

Oct 27, · Caravan and boats is the only place where you have two RCD’s in series of the same rating clearly it is belt and braces in case one party does no follow the rules, and you will find many outlets selling hook up cables smaller than mm sq, as to if needed is up for debate.
A friend of mine has a caravan she wants to use for commercial purposes next to the house and needs a caravan hookup. I wanted to talk through the installation with you guys please. Before I go on, a bit of background about me. I have taken and passed the 16th Edition and Inspection and Test. I know we’re onto the 17th Ed now but I do have electrical qualifications and am normally well disposed towards discussing issues like these. From what I can establish there seems to be only one or perhaps 2 ring mains and a lighting circuit.
So, with diversity there is certainly plenty of capacity for it. We don’t know what the earthing arrangements are for the supply, except that it is not a TT earthing system. We know if it is a PME then an earth rod will be needed for that circuit or the supply to the caravan.

On a Dodge grand caravan the battery drains overnight when temp. is cold. ( deg.) ( deg.) I was told to hook up a volt meter to battery positive terminal and to positive cable, i did and got a reading of v, so i started pulling fuses in engine compartment and inside cab, but the voltage remains the same.

Oct 10, Thanks for all the help looks like I will have to get a solar panel. As my hand book states that when the 12s scocket is pluged into the car it switches a relay to allow 12v to the fridge only. There is a 3 way switch that can be turned to van to run the 12v from the van battery another position to run the van from a car by passing the van battery the centre for when the van is being towed Your car switches a relay that supplies power to the fridge connection on your caravan socket your caravan also has relays being that its a model the relays in the caravan work from sensing the higher voltage generated when the car engine driving the alternator produces this higher voltage.
With the engine running the caravan habitation relay switches off the 12 volt power to the interior lights and sockets but it allows power to the battery for charging. The caravan Fridge relay allows power to be supplied to the fridge via the fridge cable from in your case the car relay. As stated previously you will not get much charge from the car into the caravan battery unless you drive for a very long time. I’m in the process of putting together an illustrated article on how to survive indefinitely with out an electrical hook up which will show how to wire up the car, caravan and solar panel.

Windsor Jones New Member Comlec said: All cable in the unit must be flexible and a minimum of 1. I think you are over complicating it having an MCB for each socket. The main earth terminal should be connected to the chassis. You also must ensure proper separation between the v low voltage and the 12 volt extra low voltage circuits. Oh, and don’t forget the supply notice!
Measure the voltage between the +ve and -ve terminals by connecting the negative contact from the voltmeter to the negative on the panel and the positive contact .
Books 12 Volt Electrical Systems The majority of boats on the water today depend on electricity to some degree. Unfortunately, too many of those boats are operating with inadequate and poorly installed electrical systems. This can result in unnecessary problems that drain your patience and pocketbook and that can cause safety issues. A quick fix may alleviate the problem for the short term, but if the system remains inadequate, problems will continue to plague it.
To begin taking the right steps to achieve a good electrical system on your boat you need to: Determine your power requirements Provide adequate power storage and starting capacity Provide the proper charging that you need Be sure your wiring is adequate and approved for marine use and connections are sound Engage a qualified professional if needed Be sure that all safety requirements, such as the relevant ABYC standards, are met Your boat’s batteries are a corner stone of a good electrical system.
Power boats that are used simply to run from dock to dock on weekends may need only one always two are preferable starting battery which we’ll discuss below. These are less expensive and lighter than batteries designed for deep cycling, which is what you’ll need if you stop for periods of time to anchor or drift or, far more importantly, if you plan to anchor overnight. Boats that are used for long term anchoring, as in serious cruising, need batteries capable of deeper discharges and of greater storage capacity.
Such batteries include wetted lead acid, gel and AGM deep cycle types. However, even if you just plan to run from dock to dock or dock to fishing ground or beach and back, it’s important to realize that you may be using electricity during those times that the engine is off and be prepared with the right type and size of batteries. Batteries need good wiring to deliver the power supply to the gear onboard. That’s the subject of ” Wiring “.
